The stomach has a dilated structure and functions as a vital digestive organ. In the digestive system, the stomach is involved in the second phase of digestion, following mastication (chewing). It is responsible for the temporary storage and mechanical processing (mixing and grinding) of food before it is passed on to the small intestine for further digestion.

How does it work?

It is a muscular organ located in the upper abdomen. It is part of the digestive system and plays a key role in food digestion. The stomach stores, break down, and digests food. It also produces enzymes and hormones that help the body absorb nutrients. The stomach is made up of four layers: the mucosa, submucosa, muscular, and serosa. The mucosa lines the inside of the stomach and produces hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes. The submucosa contains blood vessels, lymphatic tissue, and nerves. The muscular layer is made up of smooth muscle which helps to churn and mix food. Finally, the serosa is a protective layer of connective tissue.
